The Left-Leg Eccentric Contraction

The braking action that turns horizontal speed into vertical lift — one of the most important and least understood moves in the throw.

In the shot and discus, the block leg does something counterintuitive: it brakes. As the left leg plants and resists, it converts the thrower’s horizontal momentum into vertical lift and rotation — an eccentric (lengthening-under-load) contraction that most athletes never train deliberately.
