What College Coaches Really Look For in a Thrower
I spent 28 years recruiting throwers to a Division-I program, and I now help young athletes get recruited. Here’s what actually moves the needle — and what doesn’t.
Marks matter, but trajectory matters more
A coach doesn’t just look at your best throw. They look at how fast you’ve improved and how much room is left. A thrower with clean mechanics and an upward trend is more attractive than one with a bigger mark who’s already maxed out their technique. Coaches recruit ceilings, not just numbers.
Coachability is visible on film
When I watch an athlete’s video, I can see whether they’ve been taught well and whether they apply feedback. So can every college coach. Demonstrating that you take a correction and turn it into a change is one of the most powerful things a recruit can show.
Relationships open doors
Recruiting is still a people business. Hundreds of college coaches follow my work, and a credible introduction — backed by honest film — can put you on a radar you’d never reach alone. That’s a core part of what I do for the athletes I coach: not just make you better, but make sure the right people see it.
